FOR LIAM

JAN/FEB 2007 #2

Turning one year and three months old,
you must see that the lifetime ahead
of you takes on a grainy forever.

I know, I know, your concept of time
is still not in terms of increments
and gradations of light and dark.

Maybe, when you are old enough,
you will notice that the MGM lion
is not really scary but cute and fluffy,
and the only reason for that growling
is the fact that its head is hopelessly
caught in a two-dimensional hole.

And you can never stomp your shadow
hard enough to stop it
from following you around.

And we cannot string Christmas lights
around the house all year
and turn them on to cheer you up.

And the remote control is not edible.

And I have never seen anyone
hold the sun the way you do.

And perhaps, you are lucky to see
things like this. That way, you can
discipline your nightmares to show
only the monsters which you can
defeat with your tiny
chocolate-stained hands alone.
