WHEN WE WERE WEALTHY

by Karen L. Newman

AUGUST 2007 #4

The eighties flew by
with the wings of Farrah hair
as preppy sweater armies marched
in divisions of Izod and Ralph Lauren.
Individuals were marked only
by embroidered initials
in this copycat culture of must-haves
as material girls fortified in
shoulder-padded power suits
flooded the workplace and seas of co-eds
covered campuses in miniskirts
to mostly work toward Mrs. degrees
while getting physical
in legwarmers and leotards.
Meanwhile designer jeans sprouted
with shopping malls and spread
to the downtown dinosaurs
before extinction by globalization.

Today only knock-off jeans
and enriched memories remain
as the binding ties, hair, and employment
were cut and the suits and sweaters
were changed to skirts and T-shirts.
Our pompous pride had morphed to
cavalier carelessness as
we slowly sold ourselves out.
